Glossary

FlyKillers

Positive Phototaxis: The innate preference where a whole organism, in this case, flying insects move towards a light stimulus.

Negative Phototaxis: The innate preference where a whole organism such as cockroaches are repelled by a light stimulus.

First mount LED: A unit designed to be compatible with LED tubes from the offset, as opposed to a retrofit LED unit which relies on the ability to retrofit.

Retrofit LED: The adoption of a new LED technology applied within an existing unit so in this context, LED bulbs and tubes retrofit into Fly Killer units originally intended for less sustainable fluorescent alternatives.

IP20: An IP20 rating means that the product is protected from touch by fingers and objects greater than 12 mm. No protection from liquids.

IP21: An IP21 rating protects the device from solid matter larger than 12mm and from vertically falling water droplets.

IP54: An IP54 rating protects the device from dust and water spray from any direction.

IP65: An IP65 rating protects the device from dust and from water jets sprayed from any direction (22.5mm nozzle, 12.5l/m).

IK09: This rating determines the degree to which a device is able to resist mechanical shocks, according to standard NF C 20-010. It is measured on a scale of 0-10 based on the impact energy which can range from 0 to 20 joules. Applicable to our Vortex unit.

ATEX: The aim of ATEX (Explosive Atmospheres) regulations is to provide enhanced protection in atmospheres with a high content of organic dust and/or risk of explosion, by implementing technical and organisational measures.

Ballast: A ballast is an electrical component used to provide the necessary voltage for powering the lamp or tube, whilst reducing the current in the electrical circuit at the same time.

HACCP: The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point method is used to identify, evaluate, and manage all hazards likely to occur throughout the food production chain (from receipt of the foodstuff, through storage, to the serving). HACCP rules are applied as a means of complying with the law.

CE: CE Marking to confirm that the product complies with EC safety, health and environmental requirements.

Glue board based units: Once attracted by the UV light, flying insects are caught by an glue adhesive board within the unit which traps them.

Electric grid based units:  Uses the same UV light as Glue boards units to attract the flying insects, however these units zap the insects on contact as opposed to trap them on an adhesive surface within the unit.

UVC Disinfection

UVC Germicidal Irradiation: Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation is a method of disinfection that uses UVC light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA.

UVC Virucidal Irradiation: Ultraviolet virucidal irradiation is a method of disinfection that uses UVC light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA. Differs from germicidal due to be tested and proven on specific viruses in COFRAC laboratories.

Canyon wall effect: An effect in which UVC light is blocked by grooves or crevices in a surface creating a ‘canyon wall’ thus preventing total sterilisation.

Aerial Auto Disinfection

Venturi Effect: A reduction in fluid pressure that occurs when a fluid flows through a constricted section of a pipe. Results in a concentrated and powerful spray of billions of droplets to aid aerial disinfection in this case.
